More than meets the eye

When I was in school in California, I once saw this written on my friend Samir's AOL instant messenger profile:

"We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly."

I saved this quote, because, at the time, it seemed profound. But I don't think I really understood its meaning until just now.

Such a crazy thing inside

So yesterday I caught 1408, the new film from the director that brought us Derailed, a movie which was hyped up to have Jennifer Aniston's boobs in it but, in fact, did not. So does he deliver a similar bait-and-switch with 1408? I would say, yes. The first third — maybe even the first half — is quite tense. You are very disturbed at the prospect of what might be lurking around the corner. But after the scares start materializing, they keep coming at such a pace that they become rather normal. And, as I have learned recently, if you want to keep things exciting, you need to avoid normalcy at all costs.

Something that you feel already

Just back from seeing Wilco at the Murat. Great show, featuring the rare (for me at least) double encore. Anyway, highly recommended band. I would write more but it's past my bedtime.

Ain't got time for the game

My friend Jenn recently loaned me a book called Yes Man, which is about a 26 year-old British guy who decides to say yes to everything for a year and the wild and wacky journey that he goes on as a result. I'm not very far into it, but so far, I'm really enjoying it. And today I also discover this reminder about the power of saying yes, specifically applying the improv skill of accepting and co-creation to your life. All this is good wisdom to take to heart, lest you end up living like a hermit.

Speaking of family...

The Sopranos bowed out last night.
